Department Summary:

MITRE’s Data Science department is looking for qualified applicants to bring their machine learning, advanced analytics, and applied research skills to bear on solving problems of critical national importance. MITRE’s diverse work program provides opportunities to apply your expertise and creative thinking in challenging domains such as healthcare, transportation, and national security. Roles & Responsibilities:

The successful candidate for this position is a data scientist who combines a solid theoretical and technical background with the ability to formulate problems, design and evaluate solutions, implement hands-on solutions, and communicate results to a variety of audiences. Familiarity with advanced data science techniques and methods (e.g., supervised and unsupervised machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning) is a plus. Hands-on software development skills are a must. The candidate must

• Apply a variety of data science techniques to tackle customer challenges to include machine learning, generative AI, natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, statistical modeling, mathematical optimization, and data visualization
• Apply data science rigor throughout the machine learning lifecycle to ensure reproducibility and trustworthiness.
• Contribute to development, test and evaluation, and demonstration of data science and machine learning solutions.
• Build and test prototypes in on-premises (e.g., VMware, Linux-based platforms) and commercial cloud environments (e.g., AWS, Azure).
• Apply state of the art techniques using programming languages and development environments to drive advances in mission capabilities for MITRE sponsors.

Basic Qualifications:

• Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
• Experience using existing AI frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, Caffe, MXNet, Cognitive Toolkit, Torch)
• Proficient in Python and SQL
• Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a US Government Clearance (Secret)
• This position requires a minimum of 50% hybrid on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

• Advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
• Experience applying deep learning techniques
• Experience with Generative AI (e.g., LLM, SLMs, RAG)
• Knowledge of MLOps, particularly in the AWS environment
• Possess an active US Government Clearance (Secret)
