Assistant General Counsel, Responsible AI Full-time

The Office of Responsible AI (ORA) plays a leading role in this effort as part of Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA) team. ORA has an immediate opening for an experienced attorney to join its Governance, Enablement, Learning, and Legal (GELL) team in the role of Assistant General Counsel, Responsible AI .

You will help ensure that we develop and deploy our innovative AI technologies in cutting-edge ways that uphold Microsoft’s Responsible AI Standard and customer and regulator expectations. You must have the ability to develop and advise on strategies alongside our key partners with both sustained compliance and fast-evolving technology and techniques in mind.

Responsibilities:

Primary responsibilities include:

• Acting as legal counsel for assigned groups and matters.
• Providing strategic legal guidance regarding evolving AI regulation with the ability to scale and manage cross-functional projects.
• Engaging with internal policy partners to support Microsoft’s objectives and external initiatives.
• Building and maintaining professional, trusted, productive relationships throughout the company and with external parties.
• Exercising sound judgment in a fast-paced, rapidly changing regulatory environment.
• Partnering effectively across disciplines and a highly matrixed environment.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications

• Juris doctor or international equivalent degree and 9+ years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• OR equivalent experience.
• Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
• 3 years+ in-house counsel experience (working within a highly matrixed environment).
• Prior experience as an attorney in specialized or regulated area of practice (e.g., privacy, cybersecurity, AI, product legal).

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience managing legal projects within a prescribed time frame and budget.
• A demonstrated record of being an effective collaborator dedicated to collective successes. The ability to promote cooperation and solve problems in a timely, creative, and professional manner.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive material and information with discretion and professionalism.
• Ability to exercise a growth mindset on new and unfamiliar tasks with a record of experimentation, learning from both successes and failures.

Legal Counsel IC6 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $154,500 – $273,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $199,600 – $299,400 per year.
