The Digital Innovation Group (DIG) at Providence is a small but mighty product development and incubation team. We build next-gen tools that give patients convenient and easy access to health care anywhere, anytime.

DIG is both a healthcare startup and a technology/product incubator. Our team gathers market data on problems in the health care space and solves them with the latest and greatest technology. We scale the product from conception to maturity, culminating in a spinout of a new separate company. It is a unique mix of venture capitalists, digital strategists, marketing acumen, product development and engineering all in one group, nestled inside one of the largest health systems. We set the pace for other health care organizations on how to conceive, engineer and launch effective health care solutions.

We require your expertise and passion to bring our next set of products to life. We are currently working with cutting-edge ML, NLP and LLM technology to provide a first-in-class smart assistant platform for our patients. This includes tackling hard to solve problems around patient messaging and provider burnout. Success means you will have the opportunity to join future startups on the ground floor.

This is a remote work opportunity in Canada with occasional travel expected to Vancouver BC or Seattle WA.

POSITION

You bring together an informed mix of product and business acumen and are an expert in ML, NLP, and AI. Your work will transform healthcare through technology that is smart, sophisticated, user-centric, and measurable. You write code spanning vast expanses of the software engineering ecosystem: from a full-stack engineer, to evangelizing best practices in a micro services based environments, understanding distributed systems and big data patterns, systems engineering software that touches developer tool chains, networks and operating systems in the cloud to machine learning concepts and how common techniques and algorithms are employed in the modern cloud landscape. You draw on your knowledge and experience, as well as your big-picture view, to help raise the bar of the engineering team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

In this position you:

• Work on strategic platforms involving ML, NLP, and AI in the healthcare space, impacting several parts of the organization. You’ll figure out what needs to be done and get buy-in from senior product development leaders that it is the right thing to do.
• Rapidly set up, deploy, and measure new hypotheses to determine what makes an impact for patients and what our future technology should be.
• Manage technical responsibility for critical areas of functionality in new releases, using practiced judgment in determining what methods and evaluation criteria to employ.
• Setup code contribution and design standards; mentor senior engineering staff through code and design reviews.
• Build solutions with a proactive operations mindset to automate data ingestion and continually and measurably improve models. This includes leveraging automation to deploy all required cloud infrastructure.
• Communicate proactively and effectively all the way up to an executive level including external organizations.
• Ride the crest of the tech wavefront by having a voracious appetite to keep up to date with current technology trends around the world.
• Bring a growth mindset, customer focus, and a bias for automation, with a willingness to jump into anything and everything that will move the product forward.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mathematics or other related scientific or engineering fields. A master’s degree is preferred.
• 6+ years’ experience as a part of a highly functional software development team building world class products. Demonstrated ability to build out large systems with multiple services, data stores, message queueing technologies, caching, and data processing.
• Demonstrated success with taking theoretical/mathematical models in the ML/AI/LLM space to effective full scale production systems.
• 6+ years’ experience with polyglot programming in a variety of programming languages including (but not limited to) Java, NodeJS, C/C++, Python, Golang, command line scripting like bash and awk. Knowledge in building highly performant microservices with some degree of full stack experience
• 6+ years’ experience deep hands-on technical expertise in at least one major technical area. E.g., large scale *NIX systems engineering, building complex distributed systems, large scale machine learning/data pipeline-oriented systems.
• 2 years’ experience with Transformer or LLM or related NLU/NLP models is preferred.
• Public contributions such as open-source projects, patents, or conference presentations are preferred.
