Research Scientist – HPC and AI Networking Part-time

Join the Strategic Planning and Architecture (SPARC) team within Microsoft’s Azure Hardware Systems and Infrastructure (AHSI) organization and be a part of the organization behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. Microsoft delivers more than 200 online services to more than one billion individuals worldwide and AHSI is the team behind our expanding cloud infrastructure. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft’s cloud businesses including Microsoft Azure, Bing, MSN, Office 365, OneDrive, Skype, Teams and Xbox Live.

SPARC is looking for a research-focused HPC and AI networking expert with 10+ years experience in HPC and AI systems with a particular focus on interconnect technologies, algorithms and implementations. A qualified candidate will be familiar with congestion control, load balancing, networking and RDMA semantics and implementation details. They should feel comfortable design, evaluating and reaching conclusions from simulation and hardware based evaluation of network algorithms.

Responsibilities:

• Help to craft the overall direction of network transports and endpoint implementations across HPC, AI and datacenter systems for Microsoft.
• Engage with the networking community to align on standards and technology improvements required for high performance networking.
• Analyze and evaluate network behaviors across Microsoft’s datacenter workloads and recommend protocol and topology improvements based on the findings.

Qualifications:

Required:

• Significant number of years of network design for HPC, AI, or supercomputer systems.
• Experience designing and evaluating network transport protocols, congestion control, load balancing, and collective communication implementations.

Preferred:

• Experience with NS3 and similar network simulation tools.
• Experience and understanding of distributed AI workload communication patterns.
