THE ROLE & THE TEAM

As a Head of Applied Science (Computer Vision, Deep Learning) in the Size and Fit organization, you will lead a team of exceptional scientists to create bold research experiments with today’s most exciting approaches in Computer Vision, tackling impactful size & fit customer problems for 50+ million of Zalando customers. In addition to the science depth, research and publication track record, you must possess exceptional research management and communication skills, and above all, be a strong people leader who understands how to effectively coach an applied science team and create state-of-the-art solutions.

ABOUT SIZE & FIT

At Zalando we deeply understand that Size and Fit Matters, and are excited to use our unique and huge article and customer datasets to tackle this challenge using novel deep learning and computer vision techniques. How about you; would you like to bring in your skills to shape a great experience for your family and friends when buying clothes and shoes online?

You will join our multi-disciplinary Berlin based Size and Fit Org., composed of applied scientists, engineers, and full stack developers from +20 different nationalities. We provide recommendations and predictions on customer size and fit choices, and conduct focused experiments using emerging technologies to solve the challenges.

Working side by side with other Product Specialists, Fitting Experts, Engineers, and Applied Scientists, you will take on this complex and important topic. Your mission is to assist customers as they navigate the vast Zalando fashion catalog using fit characteristics that make sense to them.

WHAT WE’D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

• You will be a leader in Applied Science (Computer Vision, Deep Learning): Raise the scientific bar across your team and Zalando through publications in prestigious international conferences, and engaging in rigorous peer reviews. Actively collaborate with other teams and share knowledge and expertise within our talented applied science community
• You will empower the team to stay up-to-date with the latest research in computer Vision (GANs, Diffusion Models, etc.). Provide egoless and constructive scientific feedback to peers. Coach junior colleagues to become great researchers
• You will scale up, manage and mentor other junior and senior scientists, reviewing and guiding their work. Work closely with other senior leaders and engineering & product team members to bring our state of the art solutions to customers

WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

• Ph.D in Computer Vision / Deep Learning
• Solid track record in advancing research and computer vision heavy products with customer/business impact for real world problems
• Proficient in multiple recent branches of Computer Vision including Generative Adversarial Models, Diffusion Models, etc.
• 3+ years of experience leading applied science and research teams in industry or academia
• Solid publication track record in top-tier top tier conferences and journals such as CVPR, NeurIPS, ECCV, ICCV, ICML, etc.
• Hands-on expertise in Python, TensorFlow, Pytorch. Hands-on experience with Docker, Git, AWSEC2, S3, DataBricks, Postgresql, or other RDBMS
• You possess excellent communication skills and you use them to move the company forward. You can present your ideas with clarity, verbally and in writing and facilitate decision making in a timely manner
