2025 Summer Intern – Prescient Design (Machine Learning for Drug Discovery, gRED Computational Sciences)

Department Summary

Frontiers Research and the Structural & Computational Biology groups within Prescient Design seek exceptional undergraduate or graduate interns with a passion for independent research and technical problem-solving to take part in a collaborative research project interfacing state-of-the-art knowledge of antibody structure with state-of-the-art machine learning models.

At Prescient Design, we are interested in antibody-based drug discovery using a combination of machine learning and computational structural biology to accelerate the drug discovery process. We develop in-house models for protein sequence generation, protein property prediction, and protein structural modeling in order to solve challenging problems in antibody sequence design. We work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Antibody Engineering to test the performance of our machine learning model predictions, as well as iteratively optimize antibodies using our lab-in-the-loop framework.

This internship position is located in South San Francisco or New York, on-site.

The Opportunity

• Use existing software packages @ Prescient to train machine learning models related to antibody design.
• Develop new software packages aimed at modeling the relationship between protein sequence and structure.
• Use existing software packages internal and external to Prescient to structurally model antibody sequences and investigate the interplay between machine learning models and antibody structural features.
• Analyze the performance of models on downstream tasks such as protein sequence generation and/or protein property prediction.
• Communicate key results internally through presentations, and externally through presentations, posters, or papers when applicable.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
• Program start dates are in May/June 2025.

Who You Are (Required)

Required Education:

You meet one of the following criteria:

• Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree (enrolled student)
• Must have attained a Bachelor’s Degree
• Must be pursuing a Master’s Degree (enrolled student)
• Must have attained a Master’s Degree
• Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)

Required Majors: Computer Science, Mathematics, Computational Biology, Statistics.

Required Skills:

• 2+ years of extensive experience with using, writing, and maintaining python software.
• 2+ years of experience with machine learning software (i.e. PyTorch, Torch Lightning, Hydra).
• 2+ years of experience with High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments (e.g. linux computing clusters, AWS cloud computing infrastructure).
• Published code corroborating the experience listed above.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

• Experience in computational chemistry software for proteins (e.g. Rosetta, Molecular Dynamics).
• Experience with protein sequence or structural data.
• Excellent writing skills.
• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California – New York is $45.00-$50.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
